Sedation Dentistry in Missouri City

There are 3 types of sedation used at Kidzone Dental and Orthodontics.

1) Nitrous Oxide Inhalation Sedation.
2) Oral Conscious Sedation.
3) Intravenous Sedation.

Nitrous Oxide

Some children benefit from nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation sedation. It is more commonly called laughing gas and is very commonly used to relax them for their dental treatment. Nitrous oxide/oxygen is a mixture of two gases, oxygen, and nitrous oxide, where oxygen is more percentage-wise than nitrous oxide in a dental setting. Nitrous oxide/oxygen is given through a small flavored (cherry, strawberry, bubblegum, vanilla) breathing mask which is placed over the child’s nose.

It allows them to relax, but without putting them to sleep. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes this technique as a very safe and effective modality to use for treating children’s dental needs. The gas is mild, easily tolerated by most, and immediately reversible (it is quickly eliminated from the body by normal breathing). It is also non-addictive. While inhaling nitrous oxide/oxygen, your child remains fully conscious and keeps all natural reflexes.

Oral Conscious Sedation

With this modality, your child may be quite drowsy, and may even fall asleep, but will not become unconscious. There are different medications used for conscious sedation, sometimes alone and sometimes in a cocktail. Often they are taken by mouth mixed with a flavored syrup, but if the child does not cooperate with the oral dose, they can be administered through the nose or through an intramuscular injection. The doctor will prescribe the medication best suited for your child. We will be happy to answer any questions you might have concerning sedation or the specific drugs we plan to give to your child.

After the Sedation Appointment

  1. Your child will be drowsy and will need to be monitored very closely. Please keep your child away from areas of potential harm.
  2. If your child wants to sleep, place him/her on the side with the chin up. Wake up your child every hour and encourage them to have something to drink in order to keep them hydrated. Start with clear liquids, then semi-solids like a shake, smoothie, or yogurt followed by regular meals in the course of the day. Feed little but more frequently. These measures prevent nausea and vomiting.
  3. If your child vomits, help them bend over or turn their head to the side to insure that they do not inhale the vomit.
  4. Children have a tendency to bite or chew their lips, cheeks, and/or tongue and/or rub and scratch their faces after treatment. This is because they want to “explore” and “check out” the numb areas in their mouth. Please observe your child carefully to prevent any injury. These injuries typically take a long time to heal. Avoid hot, hard, and chewy food items.
  5. Please call our office for any questions or concerns that you might have.

Intravenous Sedation

Whereas Conscious sedation works well for the majority of anxious and apprehensive children, it is not the “magic bullet”. For children who would not respond well to CS, I.V. Sedation could be the answer. It is the best-controlled form of sedation and most predictable of all. The dentist performs the dental treatment in our office with the child anesthetized under I.V. administered and monitored by an anesthesiologist. This is a multidisciplinary team approach to the care of your child.
